SUMMARY:A song-writing masterclass with John Spillane
DESCRIPTION:This masterclass with RTÉ Folk Awards Album of The Year 2024 recipient and Meteor award-winning songwriter John Spillane will get to the heart of songwriting and storytelling. John will focus on helping participants to lose whatever inhibitions and fears they may have about writing songs\, while also sharing tricks of the trade on verse\, chorus\, repetition and rhyme. Songwriters should be prepared to sing and embrace the joy of the process.  \n“At my songwriting workshops we actually write songs. Having attended a few workshops where the participants play their songs to be criticised by experts who talk down to them\, I was inspired to invent a novel approach\, where we all sit down and write finished songs in one session. This teaches many lessons\, including finishing things\, which is often a big problem for writers. I create a space where all negativity\, all criticism and judgment are locked outside.” \nJohn is a musician\, songwriter\, performer\, recording artist\, storyteller\, poet and dreamer.  A native of Cork\, he lovingly describes the county as “the centre of the universe” and a source of huge creative influence throughout his career. John’s music is inspired by and encapsulates Irish traditional music in its contemporary form – a reflection of Ireland today. With an extensive back catalogue beginning with the 1997 album The Wells of the World\, his songs have been covered by Christy Moore\, Sharon Shannon\, Sean Keane and many others.  \nBooking essential\, as places are limited.

SUMMARY:Awaken Your Voice! - a workshop with Regina Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Learn a series of physical and imaginative exercises that will awaken the expressive potential of your voice. Drawing on the work of world-renowned voice specialist Kristin Linklater\, author of Freeing the Natural Voice\, these exercises will give you a clear understanding of the elements involved in developing your voice and finding more freedom and release in the breath\, body and voice in the moment of speaking. The workshop will take you through a series or ‘progression’ of step-by- \nstep practical exercises that include relaxation\, awareness of breathing\, the exploration of vocal vibrations. The work aims to awaken the expressive potential of the human voice; making this workshop ideal for anyone looking for greater confidence when speaking in public. \nPlease bring a short piece of spoken text (poetry or dramatic text – no more than 6 lines) that you are familiar with.  \n(Be aware that exercises include adapted yoga positions\, floor relaxation\, arm-swings and other physical activities. All these can be adjusted to individual physical needs.) \n  \nRegina Crowley is a designated Linklater Voice teacher and uses the work to help people find an ease and freedom when speaking. She usually works with actors but has also worked with poets and people who find it challenging to speak in public. \n  \nWhat do I need: \nLoose comfortable clothing. \nA copy of the text you are to work on and a pen and paper to jot down notes and responses to the work. \n  \nBooking essential\, as places are limited.
