In translating his father’s and grandfather’s diaries from the two World Wars, Joachim was drawn into conversation and arguments with his forefathers that never happened when they were alive. Joachim grew up in Hamburg, Germany and studied at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg, then Cambridge and Chicago. He came to Ireland in 1971 and taught German literature and language at UCC. He lives in Dunderrow.
